Crucifixion, seen from the cross

READ THE WORD

John 19:25-27

Near the cross of Jesus stood his mother, his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. 26 When Jesus saw his mother there, and the disciple whom he loved standing nearby, he said to her, “Woman, here is your son,” 27 and to the disciple, “Here is your mother.” From that time on, this disciple took her into his home.

REFLECT AND LEARN

Being His friend and following Him sometimes means other people don’t want to be friends with us.  People we love will one day die, and may even die early because of how badly people treat them. Jesus was going to die this way.  Mary, His mother, would have no family if Jesus died.  Without a man, women were very vulnerable in that culture at that time.  Jesus’ actions provided for and protected her.  He gave her a new son: John.   Family isn’t about biology, it is about love.  All biological family springs from love.
To God, family is really about  loving those who love God and each other. God won’t leave you without love because of sin.  Who is God giving you to be family to?  Many have complicated feelings about their family – maybe that’s you. As you grow in faith, God plans to give you His family as your own.  Take time to reflect now on your spiritual family.

Let’s Pray
as One.

God, you said in the garden of Eden that “it is not good for man to be alone.”  You created us for community and family.  Help me to embrace the people you have given me to love and grow from.  Thank you that they are for my good.  Help me to honor them even when they act in ways that seem hurtful.  Amen.
